Science Olympiad Dynamic Planet Practice Test

The geosphere encompasses the solid parts of the Earth, which include the crust, mantle, and core. This definition reflects the geosphere's role as the physical foundation of the planet, composed of various layers of rock and metal. The crust is the outermost layer, where we find landforms and soil; beneath it lies the mantle, composed of semi-solid rock that flows slowly over time; and at the center is the core, primarily made up of iron and nickel, which is divided into the solid inner core and the liquid outer core.

Understanding the layers of the Earth and their composition is crucial in geology and environmental sciences, as they interact with other Earth systems like the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. The geosphere plays a critical role in processes such as plate tectonics, volcanic activity, and the formation of minerals and rocks, which directly influence the development of ecosystems and the availability of natural resources.
